EXPLORATORY WORKSHOP ON THE SIKHS IN EUROPE: HISTORY, RELIGION AND REPRESENTATION

CTR - Lund University

On June 13 - 14, 2008, the Division for History and Anthropology of Religions at the Centre for Theology and Religious Studies (CTR), Lund University, is organizing an exploratory workshop on Sikh minority groups and the Sikh religion in Europe. The aim of the workshop is to gather leading scholars in the growing international field of Sikh and Punjab studies to map out current research projects on the Sikh history, religion and representation in different European countries and plan for future cooperation and projects on the European level. The workshop should also provide undergraduate and graduate students in Scandinavia an opportunity to establish contacts with leading scholars in the interdisciplinary field of Sikh studies.

Themes to be discussed during the meeting will, for instance, concern:

  • The Sikh history and patterns of migration to Europe and their demographical and social composition in different European countries.
  • The Sikh organization and self-representation in European countries and changes of religious beliefs and practices in relation to the majority societies.
  • The impact of Sikh transnational networks and organizations for religious identity, representation and ties to co-devotees in other countries.
  • Transmission of tradition and religious socialization among the second generation of Sikhs and their understanding of and attitudes towards religious identity and tradition.
  • Historical reception and contemporary interpretations of the Sikh religion in European education, culture and media.

Since the workshop should create a platform for participants to interact and plan future cooperation, the afternoon of the second day will be dedicated to discussions about collaborative projects between the invited guests and other participants who have communicated their interest in advance.

WELCOME!

The workshop is funded by the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation, the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research and Wenner-Gren Foundations.
